About this release
Lifelines (a working definition for this album):
- A rope used for safety and rescue, physically or metaphorically
- An EKG graph: the beat and rhythm of someones heart
- Written lines directly inspired by life
- Something to hold onto
This is the album I've always wanted to write, both musically and thematically. Altrock songs with earnest lyrics have been near and dear to my heart for a long time. It's years in the making, fueled by late nights and cups of coffee, learning so much, and waiting for my skills to catch up to what I wanted to say.
Lifelines as an album title has multiple meanings for me. These are songs that are deeply personal, gleaned from life, and offering hope and encouragement.
I've found that when I write vulnerable lyrics, other people deeply relate to them. I think we all have fears and insecurities that we never voice, and it's often easier to keep those hidden from others. The wonderful thing about songwriting is the chance it allows to express those emotions openly in a safe space.
Some of the songs here are about me, some are about people I know, and some are about things I've observed in life. Some songs I understood as I was writing, and some I only understood fully after I put down everything that was in my head. All of it is honest.
If there's a through-line to any of this, it's that life is both beautiful and challenging, and the best way to go through it is with those you love walking through it with you and taking every chance you can to enjoy the journey.
Acknowledgements:
- To my wife: thank you for letting me run off to the home office in the evenings to record, for being a creative ear to bounce ideas off of, and for listening to me ramble about songwriting and guitar tone.
- To the Abrasive Monologues label crew: you guys have become some of my closest friends over the last few years, and your musical and production feedback is always invaluable.
- To my brother: thanks for letting me send you demo tracks and pick your brain about music theory.
- To my featured guests (David Von Beahm, NeverDave, and Prime Birds): thank you so much for recording with me. Your contributions added so much that elevated these tracks.
- To my bandmates in Solomon's Porch and at all my churches over the years: thank you for letting me exist in the same space and learn from you by playing with you. What I get to do on this album is a direct outcome of that quality playing time.
- To my listeners: Thank you as always for continuing to support my music. It means the world to me.
